Shopping From Japan

Japan and Australia have one of the smoother trading relationships for personal parcel forwarding. The Japan Australia Economic Partnership Agreement (JAEPA) reduces tariffs on a long list of Australian goods, Japanese customs is well organised and predictable, and English on packaging and customs declarations is widely accepted.

If you live in Japan and want to buy from an Australian retailer that does not ship internationally, HotSnail gives you an Australian delivery address. Order in Australia, we receive at our Gold Coast warehouse, then forward to your Japanese address.

What Japanese buyers order from Australia

The categories we forward most often to Japan reflect both expat demand and Japanese consumer preference for premium Australian goods:

  • Wine: Penfolds, Henschke, Wynns, Yalumba. JAEPA has stripped most tariffs off Australian wine into Japan, so it is one of the destinations where Australian wine arrives at the lowest landed cost.
  • Beef and premium meat products (shelf stable forms only; fresh meat is not forwarded).
  • Health food and supplements: Swisse, Blackmores, manuka honey, royal jelly.
  • Skincare: Aesop and Jurlique are very popular with Japanese consumers and sell at a fraction of department store prices in Tokyo.
  • UGG boots (genuine Australian made labels).
  • Opals and Australian jewellery direct from Coober Pedy and Lightning Ridge dealers.
  • Vitamin gummies and infant nutrition products.

Shipping options and transit times

Australia to Japan is one of the shortest international routes from our warehouse, so transit times are friendly:

  • AusPost International Express: 4 to 8 business days door to door, end to end tracking, 20 kg cap.
  • AusPost International Standard: 8 to 16 business days, cheapest option.
  • DHL Express: 3 to 5 business days, full tracking, the fastest option.

Last mile delivery in Japan is typically handled by Japan Post, Yamato Transport (Kuroneko) or Sagawa Express, all of which have strong tracking and reliable redelivery.

Customs, duties and consumption tax

Japanese customs is run by the Customs and Tariff Bureau. The framework most relevant to personal forwarding:

  • Personal parcels with a declared value at or below JPY 10,000 (roughly AUD 110, depending on exchange rate) are usually released without duty or consumption tax. Above that, both can apply.
  • Japanese Consumption Tax (JCT) of 10% applies on imports over the threshold, calculated on CIF value.
  • JAEPA reduces or eliminates duty on many Australian categories: wine, beef, dairy, fruit, processed foods.
  • Customs assesses on what the parcel is, not just what is written on the label. Wine, leather, alcohol and tobacco all attract separate excise.
  • Gifts under JPY 10,000 are treated favourably but cannot be used as a routine workaround.

Prohibited and restricted items

Items HotSnail will not forward to Japan include fresh meat and dairy, fresh fruit and vegetables, certain plant material, counterfeit branded goods, ivory and wildlife products, and weapons including imitation firearms (Japan is strict on this). Some supplements with ingredients not approved by Japanese health authorities will be held at the border. Tobacco and alcohol can be forwarded but attract specific excise.

Addressing your parcel

Japanese addresses run from largest to smallest unit: postal code (formatted 100-0001), prefecture, city or ward, then progressively smaller blocks. We recommend supplying the address in both Romaji (Latin characters) and Kanji where possible. Kanji on the label improves last mile accuracy. A mobile number is required for DHL and most last mile carriers in Japan.
